The Catholic devotion to Mary during the month of May has a rich and evolving history, blending popular piety and liturgical tradition. While specific origins are debated, the association of May with Mary largely developed over several centuries.
Early Roots
Even before May was specifically dedicated to Mary, springtime has long been associated with renewal and fertility, mirroring Mary's role in bringing new life into the world through Christ. Ancient Greek and Roman cultures dedicated May to goddesses like Artemis and Flora, and some scholars suggest early Christians may have intentionally "baptized" these pagan customs by dedicating the month to the Virgin Mary.
Medieval Period
By the 13th century, there's evidence of May being recognized as a special time for Marian devotion. King Alfonso X of Spain wrote about honoring Mary in May in his Cantigas de Santa Maria.
Around the same time, the German mystic Blessed Henry Suso had the custom of adorning statues of Mary with flowers in the springtime.Boroque Era and Formalization
The more formal dedication of May to Mary emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly within the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Father Latomia of the Roman College is often credited with popularizing the practice in the late 18th century to combat infidelity and immorality among students.
From Rome, this custom spread to other Jesuit colleges and then to parishes throughout the Catholic world. By the early 19th century, May devotions were common in many churches in Italy and soon spread to France and beyond.19th & 20th Centuries
The 19th century saw the widespread adoption of May as "Mary's Month," with various devotional practices solidifying. These included the recitation of the Rosary, May crownings (adorning statues of Mary with flowers), and special Marian prayers and hymns.
Popes actively encouraged this devotion. Pope Pius VII granted indulgences for participating in May devotions in 1815, and Pope Pius IX made these indulgences plenary in 1859.
In 1954, Pope Pius XII further emphasized the importance of May as a Marian month by establishing the Feast of the Queenship of Mary on May 31st (later moved to August 22nd following Vatican II, with May 31st becoming the Feast of the Visitation)Present Day
Today, May remains a significant month for Marian devotion in the Catholic Church. Parishes often organize special Rosary recitations, May crownings, and other Marian devotions. Many Catholics also incorporated personal Marian prayers and practice into their daily lives during this time.
