What is this event? By tradition, following Mass on the Feast of Corpus Christi (or the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, which celebrates the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper), Catholics process the Eucharist through the streets of their city, while praying and singing. We place the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance, which is held aloft by a member of the clergy during the procession.
Why do we do it? The Corpus Christi Procession makes known God’s presence in our world and in our lives, and it reminds us of our common call to follow Christ and seek Heaven. It is both an act of personal devotion to Christ in the Eucharist, as well as an act intended to share God’s love with the world, as is manifest in the Blessed Sacrament.
Where is it? The procession will begin after the 9:00a Mass for the Feast of Corpus Christi on June 10th at St. Francis on the Brazos (315 Jefferson Ave). Immediately after Mass, we will proceed from St. Francis (pausing for two “altar of repose” to pray, reflect on Scripture and sing hymns) to St. Mary's Assumption (1401 Washington Ave) where we will complete the procession with Adoration, Praise & Worship, and Benediction.
How do I get there? Participants are responsible for their own transportation to this event and should park across the street from St. Francis on the Brazos (in the school parking lot). We will have a bus available at St. Mary's Assumption to shuttle pilgrims back to their cars.
How do I get back to my car after the procession is over? Waco Transit has been paid for two hours of service to take participants back to their automobile at St. Francis. Buses will run for two hours starting at 11:45a.
Who can participate? This event is intended for all ages. We desire to have a large contingent as we witness to the Body and Blood of Christ amongst our peers. Everyone is welcome to attend. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent of guardian.
Do I have to register? No registration is necessary. We expect all participants to cooperate with the City of Waco on traffic flow.
What if I don’t make it to St. Francis before the procession begins? No problem! You can join us at one of the altar stops along the way or meet us at St. Mary's at 11:15a (our estimated arrival time).
Can I join in adoration, but not walk in the procession? Absolutely! If you are unable to walk with us, you can join us at St. Mary's at 11:15a.
How far is the procession? From start to end it is 1 mile. We will take approximately 1 hour. Two, eight-person carts will be available to those physically unable to make the walk. Seating will be limited.
What is the dress attire? Please dress comfortably, but appropriately. Remember that we are in the presence of Christ, and are also acting as witnesses of Christ to onlookers. Represent yourself AND Jesus well. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk in the procession.
What happens if weather is bad that day? We cannot predict the weather this far in advance; especially in Texas. Therefore, we will post any changes and backup plans at a closer date if the weather is bad.
Will there be restrooms along the way? It will be essential to make use of the restrooms at St. Francis prior to our departure. We will be walking through primarily business and non-profit areas, and there will not be available restroom facilities between the churches. There will not be any scheduled restroom breaks along the way. If you do have to stop, it will be your responsibility to catch up with the procession again afterward. There will be restrooms available at St. Mary's Church and at the Parish Hall across the street from the Church entry.
